History and Significance
History
- According to Chapter 70 of the Kashi Khand, Shailputri is enshrined near Shaileshwar Shivling in the Rajghat area of Varanasi. As the daughter of the Himalayas (Haimavati), her worship in Kashi dates back to ancient times. The temple lies close to the ancient settlement area of Kashi along the Varuna-Ganga confluence.
Significance
- Shailputri is worshipped on the very first day of Navratri as the primary incarnation among the Navadurgas. Worshipping her removes obstacles resulting from bad company and bestows spiritual grounding and strength. She holds a trident and lotus, riding a bull to bless her devotees.
