- Construction was initiated in the 12th century CE by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty and completed by Ananga Bhima Deva III. Built in the Kalinga architectural style, the central vimana reaches 214 feet on an elevated stone plinth. The sanctum houses wooden deities of Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Subhadra.
Significance
- Puri Jagannath Temple is one of the primary Char Dham pilgrimage centers and the spiritual hub of Odisha. It is world-renowned for the annual Ratha Yatra, where massive grand chariots carry the deities through Puri. The temple kitchen (Ananda Bazar) produces Mahaprasad using traditional clay pots over wood fires.
