- An ancient shrine referenced in classical Sanskrit literature and Kalidasa's works, the temple was destroyed in the 13th century during Delhi Sultanate raids. The current five-storey structure was built in 1734 CE by Maratha general Ranoji Shinde and renovated under the Scindia dynasty. The complex sits beside the Rudra Sagar Lake in Ujjain.
Significance
- Mahakaleshwar is the only South-facing (Dakshinamurti) Jyotirlinga, considered especially sacred for conquering death and time. The temple is famous worldwide for its daily early morning Bhasma Aarti ritual using sacred ash. Ujjain hosts the grand Simhastha Kumbh Mela every twelve years along the Shipra River.
