History
- Construction
- 1947 - 1951
- According to tradition, the original temple was built in gold by Somraj, silver by Ravana, wood by Krishna, and stone by Bhimdev Solanki. The historic site suffered repeated destruction by invaders, including Mahmud of Ghazni in 1026. Reconstruction of the modern temple was initiated by Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in 1947, and the Pran-Pratistha ceremony was performed on May 11, 1951, by Dr. Rajendra Prasad.
Significance
- Somnath is revered as the first (Aadi) of the twelve holy Jyotirlinga shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva across India. Located at the Triveni Sangam confluence of the Kapila, Hiran, and Saraswati rivers, it is traditionally associated with the Moon God being freed from Daksha's curse. It stands as an eternal symbol of spiritual devotion and cultural resilience.
