Temple Profile

History and Significance

History

Founded
1600
Founder
King Bir Hambir
  • Rasmancha was commissioned around 1600 CE by Malla King Bir Hambir after embracing Gaudiya Vaishnavism under Saint Srinivas Acharya. Built on a massive square laterite plinth, it was designed as a unique festival pavilion rather than a daily worship sanctum. It is the oldest surviving brick and laterite structural monument in Bishnupur.

Significance

  • The structure features an extraordinary stepped pyramidal superstructure surrounded by triple-arched gallery corridors. During the historical Ras festival, deities from all local temples across Bishnupur were brought here for public congregation and worship. It represents a landmark innovation in medieval Bengali secular-religious architecture.
