- The Konark Sun Temple was commissioned around 1250 AD by King Narasimhadeva I of the Eastern Ganga Dynasty to commemorate military triumphs. Built by 1,200 master sculptors under chief architect Bisu Maharana over 12 years, the temple was carved out of khondalite rock. It is designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Significance
- Konark Sun Temple is designed as a monumental 24-wheeled chariot pulled by seven horses, carrying the Sun God Surya across the sky. The 12 pairs of carved stone wheels function as precise sundials capable of telling time to the minute. Known historically as the 'Black Pagoda' by European sailors, it is an architectural masterwork of Odisha.
