- Built between the late 7th and early 8th century CE by the Badami Chalukya dynasty, the temple is an iconic masterpiece of early Western Chalukyan architecture. The name Durga originates from 'Durgadbavagilu' (fortress enclosure) near which it stood, rather than Goddess Durga. Inscriptions suggest that the shrine was originally dedicated to Surya, the Sun God.
Significance
- The temple is globally famous for its rare apsidal (gajaprishta) plan, which resembles an ancient Buddhist chaitya hall with an open ambulatory corridor. It represents an early architectural synthesis of Nagara and Dravidian design elements. The sculpted friezes along the pillared porch depict Vishnu, Shiva, Durga, and Surya.
