- Athkheliya Namghar traces its establishment to 1681 CE when Ahom King Gadadhar Singha took refuge here during political unrest. After ascending the throne, he formally organized the prayer house across eight surrounding clans (khels). It has served for centuries as a major center of Srimanta Sankardeva's Ekasarana Dharma.
Significance
- Athkheliya Namghar is one of Assam's most venerated congregational prayer houses, emphasizing devotion to Lord Krishna without idol worship. Thousands of devotees assemble during the holy month of Bhadra for day-long chanting and singing of Borgeets. It exemplifies community equality and Neo-Vaishnavite spiritual philosophy.
