- According to Kerala legend, Vadakkunnathan Temple was the first temple founded by Sage Parasurama after reclaiming Kerala from the sea. Built in classic Kerala timber and tile architecture inside a 9-acre walled compound, it features ancient mural paintings and wood carvings. It received the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award for Cultural Heritage Conservation in 2015.
