History and Significance

History

Founder
Pallava and Chola Dynasties
Construction
5th - 16th century CE
  • Initial stone structures were built by Pallava kings in the 5th century, with major expansions undertaken by Rajendra Chola I in the 11th century. Vijayanagara monarch Krishnadevaraya built the 100-pillar hall and outer structures in the early 16th century. The temple sits between the Swarnamukhi River and Seshachalam hills.

Significance

  • Srikalahasteeswara Temple represents Vayu (Air) among the Pancha Bhoota Stalam Shiva shrines. A lamp flame inside the underground sanctum flickers continuously despite no air movement, signifying Shiva as the Vayu Lingam. The temple is famous for the devotion of Sri (Spider), Kala (Serpent), and Hasti (Elephant), and is widely visited for Rahu-Ketu Sarpa Dosha pujas.
