- According to Ramayana tradition, Lord Rama established and prayed to the Shivlinga here to seek purification after defeating Ravana. The stone structure was expanded in the 12th century by the Pandyan Dynasty and later by Sethupathi rulers of Ramanathapuram. The world-famous outer pillared corridor was completed during the 18th century.
Significance
- Ramanathaswamy Temple holds premier spiritual status both as one of the 12 sacred Jyotirlingas and one of India's four Char Dham sites. It boasts the longest temple corridor in the world, flanked by over 1,200 carved sandstone pillars. Devotees take ritual baths in 22 holy water tanks (Teerthams) inside the complex prior to worship.
