History

Construction
1212 CE - 1234 CE
  • The Ramappa Temple, also known as the Rudreshwara Temple, was commissioned in 1213 CE by Recherla Rudra, a general of the Kakatiya ruler Ganapati Deva. The construction of the complex spanned over forty years, wrapping up around 1234 CE under the supervision of the chief architect Ramappa. It is celebrated as the only temple in India named after its primary sculptor rather than its patron or deity.

Significance

  • The temple is renowned for its exceptional engineering, including a sandbox foundation to absorb seismic shocks and a roof built of lightweight, porous floating bricks. It features exquisite carvings on dolerite and granite, particularly its famous bracket figures of dancing Madanikas. In 2021, it was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, representing the pinnacle of medieval Deccan temple architecture.
