- While legendary accounts attribute the founding of the temple to Lord Rama in the Treta Yuga, archaeological excavations indicate historical roots dating to the 4th-5th century CE under the Vishnukundin dynasty. Excavations have revealed extensive brick fortifications, palace foundations, and Shaivite structures belonging to this early era. The site has historically served as a significant political and religious fortress in the Deccan.
Significance
- The temple is centered around a self-manifested Swayambhu Shivalinga, surrounded by numerous smaller Shivalingas scattered across the hill, representing Hanuman's offerings. It features the earliest known Telugu label inscription in Telangana, paleographically dated to the 5th century CE. Archaeological excavations in 2014 also uncovered 12 Jain Tirthankara idols, showcasing a historic co-existence of Jain and Shaivite traditions.
