- Kasi Viswanathar Temple at Tenkasi was founded in 1445 AD by Later Pandyan King Arikesari Parakrama Pandyan following a vision from Lord Shiva. Unable to travel to Varanasi (Kashi), the king established 'Tenkasi' ('Kashi of the South') along the Chittar River. The modern 180-foot Rajagopuram was rebuilt in 1990.
Significance
- Tenkasi Kasi Viswanathar Temple was constructed so southern pilgrims could obtain the spiritual merit of visiting Varanasi without travelling North. The temple features a towering 180-foot Rajagopuram and exquisite twin musical pillars carved from single granite blocks. The deity Viswanathar and Goddess Ulagamman remain the spiritual heart of Tenkasi.
