- The Bull Temple (Dodda Basavana Gudi) was built in 1537 CE by Kempe Gowda I, the founder of Bengaluru, in Basavanagudi. Built in the Vijayanagara architectural style, it was erected to appease a bull that grazed on local groundnut crops. The monolithic bull was sculpted from a single granite hill outcrop.
Significance
- The temple encloses a massive monolithic Nandi bull statue measuring 15 feet in height and 20 feet in length. It hosts the annual Kadalekai Parishe (Groundnut Fair), where local farmers offer their first peanut harvest to Nandi. It stands as a heritage landmark of Bengaluru.
