- Tirupparankundram Subramanya Temple is a major rock-cut cave shrine constructed by Pandyan rulers during the 6th century AD. Expansions during the Nayak period added carved pillared halls (Mandapams). The principal sanctum is carved directly into the mountain rock.
Significance
- This sacred rock-cut shrine represents the venue where Lord Murugan wedded Deivayanai, daughter of Lord Indra. It is famous for its rock sanctum housing side-by-side deities Shiva, Vishnu, Durga, Ganesha, and Subramanya. It remains an outstanding example of early Pandyan architecture.
