- Thiruchendur Murugan Temple is an ancient coastal temple recorded in early Sangam literature including Aganaanooru. Rock-cut sanctum structures date back to the Pandyan period, while the nine-tiered 137-foot Raja Gopura was constructed in the 17th century by Desikamoorthy Swamigal. It sits along the shore of the Bay of Bengal.
Significance
- Thiruchendur is the second abode among Lord Murugan's Arupadai Veedu and the only one situated on the seashore rather than on a mountain. It commemorates Murugan's victory over the demon king Surapadman, celebrated during the grand Soorasamharam festival. Devotees take holy sea baths before entering the temple.
