Temple Profile

History and Significance

History

Founded
c. 6th Century BCE
Founder
King Bimbisara of Magadha
  • Venu Vana (the Bamboo Grove) was originally gifted by King Bimbisara of Magadha to Gautama Buddha in the 6th century BCE, making it the first historic monastery (vihara) of Buddhism. The modern temple and park complex were developed to restore the site's historical significance as a place where Buddha lived and lectured. Archaeological excavations have uncovered ancient foundations, water tanks, and structural remains belonging to the Mauryan and Gupta eras.

Significance

  • The site holds immense spiritual significance as the first physical dwelling accepted by Gautama Buddha, where he spent several rainy season retreats (vassavasa) and delivered many key discourses. The complex features a peaceful bamboo grove, a central sacred pond (Karanda Tank) where Buddha bathed, and a modern temple housing a beautiful gilded statue of the Buddha. It attracts Buddhist pilgrims from across the globe, serving as a peaceful center for meditation and spiritual study.
