History and Significance

History

Founded

Founder
Ashoka / Licchavis

The brick stupa structure was enlarged during the Mauryan, Sunga, and Gupta eras, reaching its present giant form under the Pala Dynasty. It was excavated by the Archaeological Survey of India in 1998.

Significance

  • Kesaria Stupa stands as one of the tallest ancient Buddhist stupas in the world, rising over 104 feet in circular terraced layers.
