- Tripura Sundari Temple (Matabari) was established in 1501 AD by Manikya dynasty king Maharaja Dhanya Manikya in Udaipur, the ancient capital of Tripura. Built on a small hillock resembling a tortoise back (Kurma Pristha), it exhibits Bengali chala hut-style stone architecture. An adjacent sacred lake named Kalyan Digha houses large tortoises.
Significance
- Tripura Sundari Temple is recognized as one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, where Goddess Sati's right foot fell. The sanctum enshrines a 5-foot black reddish stone idol of Goddess Tripura Sundari (Soroshi). It is the premier spiritual center of Tripura state, drawing vast crowds during Diwali and Navratri.
