- According to legend, the holy cave of Vaishno Devi was discovered by Pandit Sridhar after Goddess Vaishnavi manifested to him. Administration of the shrine was formalized under statutory trust management through the Jammu and Kashmir Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Act of 1986. Continuous infrastructure additions have been developed to support millions of visiting pilgrims.
Significance
- Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine is one of the premier pilgrimage destinations in Northern India, located in the Trikuta Mountains at an altitude of 5,200 feet. Inside the natural cave, Goddess Vaishno Devi is manifested as three natural rock formations known as the Holy Pindies representing Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi, and Maha Saraswati. Devotees trek 12 kilometers from Katra to seek blessings.
