Founder
Chola Kings / Koneswaram Trust
  • Shankari Devi Temple was originally part of the ancient Koneswaram temple complex in Trincomalee, Sri Lanka, built by Chola kings. The original temple was destroyed during Portuguese rule in 1624 AD. A new shrine dedicated to Goddess Shankari was constructed alongside the rebuilt Koneswaram temple on Swami Rock cliff.

Significance

  • Shankari Temple in Trincomalee is venerated as the first among the 18 Maha Shakti Peethas (Ashtadasa Shakti Peetha), where Sati's groin (Rutu) fell. Perched dramatically on Swami Rock cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean, it forms an integral Sri Lankan pilgrimage site alongside Koneswaram Shiva Temple.
