History

Founder
King Mahipala
Construction
1093 AD
  • The Sas Bahu Temples (originally Sahasrabahu Temples) were built in 1093 AD by Kachchhapagata King Mahipala inside Gwalior Fort. The larger temple was built for the Queen to worship Lord Vishnu, while the adjacent smaller temple was built for the Prince's wife to worship Lord Shiva. Popular corruption evolved 'Sahasrabahu' into 'Sas-Bahu' (Mother-in-law and Daughter-in-law).

Significance

  • Sas Bahu Temples are two 11th-century sandstone architectural wonders situated atop Gwalior Fort. The larger three-storeyed temple features open carved balconies, intricate ceilings, and stone pillars decorated with relief figures of Vishnu's manifestations. It offers panoramic views of Gwalior city.
