History and Significance

History

Founder
Chola Dynasty / Nayak Dynasty
  • Sarangapani Temple was established during the Chola era and substantially expanded by the Thanjavur Nayaks in the 15th-16th centuries. Featuring a majestic 147-foot tall 11-tiered rajagopuram, it is one of the largest Vishnu temples in Kumbakonam. It was praised by seven Alvars in the Naalayira Divya Prabandham.

Significance

  • The central sanctum is carved entirely out of granite in the shape of a massive horse-drawn chariot. Legend says hearing the 'Aravamude' verse sung here inspired Nathamuni to recover the lost 4,000 Tamil Divya Prabandham hymns. It is regarded as one of the major Pancha Ranga Kshetrams.
