History and Significance

History

Founded
Ancient
Founder
Early Bengal rulers
  • The Ratnavali Temple in Khanakul, built along the banks of the sacred Ratnakar River (now Damodar), has ancient origins as a primary Shakta shrine in Bengal. The temple has faced periodic flooding over the centuries, leading to several reconstructions by local Vaishnava-Shakta merchant guilds and zamindars. The present stone-and-brick structure preserves a deeply sacred inner sanctum that is situated below ground level.

Significance

  • The temple is revered as one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, believed to be the sacred spot where the right shoulder of Goddess Sati fell during Shiva's cosmic dance of destruction. The goddess is worshipped in her form as Kumari (the pure virgin), and Lord Shiva is worshipped alongside her as Bhairava Shiva. It serves as a major pilgrimage center during the annual Kali Puja and Shiva Ratri festivals, representing the deep spiritual synthesis of the Hooghly region.
