History and Significance

History

Founder
Early Chola Dynasty / Kochenganan
  • Nachiyar Kovil was built by Early Chola King Kochenganan as an elevated temple. Praised in 110 verses by Thirumangai Alvar who received spiritual initiation here, the temple displays multi-tiered Chola granite design.

Significance

  • Female primacy is maintained here as Goddess Vanjulavalli Thayar takes precedence over Lord Srinivasa in all rituals and processions. The shrine is world-famous for its stone Kal Garuda icon, which grows exponentially heavier during processions, requiring doubling numbers of bearers at each stage.
