History and Significance

History

Founded
8th century CE
Founder
Chola Dynasty
  • The temple is historically linked to Arjuna, who performed penance at this location to secure Lord Vishnu's grace and divine weapons. According to local lore, Lord Vishnu appeared as Parthasarathy and quenched Arjuna's thirst by creating a spring with his conch. The present stone structure was constructed during the Chola period with later medieval additions.

Significance

  • Praised by Thirumangai Alvar in the Nalayira Divya Prabandham, it is one of the 108 Divya Desams within the Thirunangur cluster. The presiding deity features a distinct iconographic form where the conch and discus are interchanged between the hands. It is also significant for housing a dedicated shrine for Vaishnava Durga.
