Temple Profile

History and Significance

History

Founded
8th century CE
Founder
Pallava Dynasty
  • The temple centers upon a rock-cut cave sanctuary excavated during the Pallava period in the 8th century CE. Stone inscriptions surrounding the sanctuary record endowments of land and lamps granted by Chola King Rajaraja I and later local chieftains.

Significance

  • The presiding deity, Pataladri Narasimha, is carved directly out of the living rock hillock in a seated posture. Uniquely, the deity features a third eye on his forehead, symbolizing his fierce form after slaying Hiranyakashipu. Devotees perform girivalam (circumambulation) around the hillock to fulfill vows.
