- The Kapal Kundala Kali Temple, located in Dariapur near Contai in Purba Medinipur, has historic links to Tantric Kapalika ascetics who lived along the coast. The present brick temple was built in the 18th century, though the site had been a center for esoteric rituals long before. It was immortalized in Bengali culture by the renowned novelist Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay in his 1866 novel Kapalkundala.
