History and Significance

History

Founded

Founder
King Nara Narayana
Construction
1565 CE
  • Rebuilt in 1565 CE by King Nara Narayana of the Koch dynasty after suffering destruction by Kala Pahar, the temple displays a distinctive beehive-like dome (Nilachal architectural style). Situated atop Nilachal Hill, archaeological excavations reveal foundation layers dating to the 8th-9th century Mleccha dynasty. It remains the core of Tantric worship in Eastern India.

Significance

  • Kamakhya is revered as the oldest among the 51 Shakti Peethas, marking the site where Goddess Sati's yoni fell during Shiva's Tandava. The sanctum features a natural underground cave spring with a Yoni-shaped bedrock rather than an idol. The temple is globally famous for the annual Ambubachi Mela celebrating divine feminine power.
