History

Founded

Founder
Satavahana Dynasty
  • Located in Cave 8 among 30 rock-cut caves on Lenyadri hill, Girijatmaj Temple features rock-cut architecture dating to the 1st-3rd century AD. The hall was adapted into a Ganesha shrine during the medieval Ganapatya revival. Carved out of a mountain cliff, 307 stone steps lead pilgrims to the shrine.

Significance

  • Girijatmaj Lenyadri is the sixth Ashtavinayak shrine and the only one situated on a mountain within an ancient rock-cut cave. 'Girijatmaj' signifies 'mountain-born', marking the spot where Goddess Parvati performed penance for 12 years to give birth to Ganesha. The vast cave hall has no supporting pillars and receives natural sunlight.
