Temple Profile

History and Significance

History

Founded
  • The idol of Lord Ganesha at Ganpatipule is a naturally formed (swayambhu) monolithic image discovered over 400 years ago along the Konkan coast. The temple structure was developed over centuries on the white sand beach at the base of a hill. It served as a major regional coastal shrine during the Maratha era.

Significance

  • Ganpatipule Temple is a unique seaside Ganesha temple where the copper-adorned swayambhu idol faces west toward the Arabian Sea to guard the western gates. Pilgrims perform a circumambulation (pradakshina) around the entire hill behind the temple rather than just the sanctum. Set against scenic white beaches, it is one of Konkan's most popular pilgrimage spots.
