Thigala Community / Kempe Gowda I
  • The Dharmaraya Swamy Temple was established over 800 years ago by the Thigala community in Bengaluru's historic central district. It was expanded during the 16th century under Kempe Gowda I, the founder of Bengaluru. It is one of the few shrines in India dedicated to the Pandavas and Draupadi.

Significance

  • The temple is famous as the starting point and focal site of the annual Bengaluru Karaga festival. A priest clad in traditional attire balances a floral pyramid on his head during an all-night urban procession. The sanctum enshrines Draupadi Devi alongside Dharmaraya and the Pandava brothers.
