History and Significance
History
- Founded
- 1864 AD
- Founder
- Swami Haridas
- Construction
- 1864
- The idol of Shri Banke Bihari Ji was manifested through the devotional music of Swami Haridas at Nidhivan in the 16th century. In 1864 AD, the grand temple structure was constructed in Vrindavan with contributions from Goswamis and devotees. The unique curtain-drawing (jhanki) system was established to prevent devotees from losing consciousness under the deity's gaze.
Significance
- Shri Banke Bihari Temple is one of the most famous Krishna shrines in Vrindavan, worshipping Krishna in the bent-at-three-places pose ('Banke Bihari'). Uniquely, the temple does not use bells or conch shells for morning wake-up rituals so as not to disturb the child deity's rest. Curtains are repeatedly pulled across the sanctum every few minutes during darshan.
