History and Significance

History

Founded
c. 19th Century CE
Founder
Local Vaishnava community
  • The Jagannath Temple of Astaranga was constructed in the 19th century near the coastal salt pans and fishing ports of the Puri district. It was designed to provide a local spiritual center for the coastal communities who could not regularly travel to the main temple in Puri. The structure follows the traditional three-chambered Odishan temple style with a Vimana, Jagamohana, and Natamandapa.

Significance

  • Located in 'Astaranga' (meaning colorful sunset), the temple is dedicated to the triad of Lord Jagannath, Balabhadra, and Goddess Subhadra. It holds immense local significance as a spiritual guardian for the maritime and fishing communities, who offer prayers here before embarking on sea voyages. The temple celebrates the annual Ratha Yatra festival with deep local enthusiasm, mirroring the grand rituals of the Puri Dham on a community scale.
