History and Significance

History

Founded
Ancient
  • Arasuri Ambaji Temple is an ancient Shakti Peetha shrine situated in the Aravalli hills of Banaskantha district. The white marble temple complex was extensively expanded in modern times by the Shri Arasuri Ambaji Mata Devasthan Trust. Uniquely, the inner sanctum houses no physical idol, worshipping instead the sacred Viso Yantra.

Significance

  • Ambaji Temple is venerated as one of the major 51 Shakti Peethas, where Goddess Sati's heart is believed to have fallen. Worship in the sanctum centers on a sacred gold-plated Viso Yantra inscribed on stone. Millions of pilgrims trek on foot to Ambaji during the annual Bhadarvi Poonam fair.
