- King Rajasekhara of Pandalam
- According to tradition, Sabarimala Temple was established where Lord Ayyappa (Manikandan) meditated after defeating the demoness Mahishi. King Rajasekhara of Pandalam built the shrine where Ayyappa's arrow fell. Managed by the Travancore Devaswom Board, major modern rebuilds followed a sanctum fire in 1950.
Significance
- Sabarimala Sree Dharma Sastha Temple is one of the largest annual pilgrimage centers in the world, welcoming millions of devotees irrespective of caste or creed. Pilgrims observe a 41-day Vrutham of strict celibacy and austerity, carrying the Irumudi Kettu up the 18 Holy Steps (Pathinettam Padi). Major festival seasons include Mandala Pooja (Nov-Dec) and Makaravilakku (Jan).
