- The Palitana temple cluster on Shatrunjaya Hill was constructed over generations from the 11th century AD onwards, sponsored by wealthy Jain merchants and Solanki kings. After facing destruction during medieval invasions, the temples were rebuilt in marble during the 16th to 19th centuries. The hill complex encompasses over 860 individual marble shrines grouped into fortified enclosures (tuks).

- Palitana is considered the most sacred pilgrimage site (Tirthadhiraja) for Svetambara Jains, featuring over 860 marble temples perched on Shatrunjaya Hill. The central shrine is dedicated to Lord Adinatha (Rishabhanatha), who delivered his first sermon on this hill. It is legally declared the world's first vegetarian city, where no night stays or animal slaughter are permitted.
